Homosexual law reform

Sir, — Mr Freer’s decision to drop his homosexual law reform bill (“The Press,” August 23) is to be commended but he has not accurately represented the opposition of gay rights groups to the bill. It is insult enough to expect us to compromise on an age' of consent of 20, thereby sacrificing the rights of the younger male homosexual, but does Mr Freer honestly expect us to go along with a bill which provides penalties from five years imprisonment for those less than 20? The bill does nothing to stop discrimination aginst lesbian women and gay men, and runs counter to the principles of Mr Freer’s own Labour Party which guarantee full respect for the rights of all people regardless of sexual orientation. We bitterly resent the latest attempt to impose moral legislation on a minority and demand that Parliament remove all discriminatory laws relating to homosexuality. — Yours, etc., MARTIN OELDERINK, (Regional representative, National Gay Rights Coalition). August 24, 1979.
