Decision deadline
PA Auckland The national soccer coach, Mr John Adshead, has given the key midfield player, Brian Turner, until Friday for a final decision on whether he will tour the Middle East and Britain with the New Zealand team in October. If Turner is still in doubt by then, Mr Adshead will replage him. The New Zealand coach is also prepared to replace Trans Tours United's Johan Verweij, who suffered bad injuries in a coaching session late last week. Turner is out of work, and has told Mr Adshead that he will not tour if he has not lined up a
new job before the team leaves on September 28. Mr Adshead is sympathetic, but will not hesitate to act on September 1. “Soccer is still an amateur sport here, and we are at the mercy of employers,” said Mr Adshead. “Fortunately employers have been very good to us. Turner is out of a job and this concerns me. “He’s an integral part of the present New Zealand team, and figures prominently in future plans, but I can’t make exceptions for him. “August 31 is the deadline because a replacement will need plenty of notice.”
