Soccer Stormy win for Rangers
Rangers won its way through to the semi-finals of the English Cup soccer competition on Saturday when it beat Woolston W.M.C. in a stormy match, 2-1, at English Park. During the game, played in wet and cold conditions, the Woolston captain, Allan Boath, was sent off for allegedly using foul and abusive language and the Woolston coach, Mr Terry Mann, will be reported to the Canterbury Football Association after protesting about Boath’s sending off. Steve Welford, playing his first match for Rangers since April 23, missed two good chances in the first five minutes and after nine minutes, Graham Dacombe, Woolston’s best player, gave his team the lead after a goalmouth scramble. One minute later came the strangest goal of the season. The Woolston goal-keeper, Neville Petrie, placed the ball on the ground for a free kick but while he was walking back to take it, the Rangers striker, Neil Francis, ran in and kicked it into the goal. After consulting with his linesmen, the referee,
i Mr Ben Gunn, awarded the goal. Woolston attacked strongly and i Mike Millward and Dacombe had ■ shots blocked. After 57 minutes, , Welford scored the winning goal from an indirect free kick. It t was after this goal that Boath , was sent off. Ten minutes from the end, J Petrie saved a penalty by John i Souter. Two players, Allan South , (Rangers) and Brent Simpson , (Woolston) were cautioned dur- ' ing the match. Technical beat Shamrock, 4-2, ‘ on penalties at Riccarton Domain after the scores were level at 3-3 after extra time. The scores 1 were also level at half-time at 1 2-2. lan Cowan played well for ’ Technical, scoring twice, with • Kevin Grant adding the third. 1 Barrv O’Neill, Derek Neal and 1 Roger Stott scored for Shamrock. : Western's match with Papanul : W.M.C. was called off and will ibe played next Saturday at i English Park, as.will the semii final between Rangers and Cash- ■ mere-Wanderers, which had the bye in the first round.
