Horticulturists seek expertise
New Zealand badly needs expertise in the marketing of horticultural products overseas, according to the managing director of Nelson’s T.N.L. Group (Mr G. Butler). He told the twenty-fifth anniversary convention of the Institute of ' Agricultural •Science at Lincoln College yesterday that many parties had a role to play in this endeavour.
The grower faced the greatest financial risk, had the greatest investment, and therefore should have some influence over the decisions made on how to export his produce. He urged growers to unite in an association. Government departments played a role in the industry by opening up overseas markets and by conducting vital research.
Product promotion and market assessment had to be done overseas by skilled people, including citizens of the host countries. “We can learn a lot from the Japanese examples we have seen,” said Mr Butler. Of transport he said, “We are often in the realms of disaster.” Air freight , was rapidly
becoming too expensive for moving horticultural produce, but container services seemed to be improving. The future seemed bright but expert assessment was needed to find out what the market wanted. Tax relief Was also needed, “and probably other financial help,” for the horticultural industry.
