Eye-safety seminar

More - than 80 optometrists, eye specialists, and industrial health nurses are in Christchurch to discuss industrial eye safety. They are attending a seminar on the subject, arranged by the Society for the Prevention of Blindness and the Accident Compensation Commission. The two-day session has covered such subjects as “Chemical eye injuries.” “major eye trauma,” “eye safety appliances — problems and fittings,” and “selling eye safety to the staff.” Among the speakers have been the commission’s director of safety (Mr I. B. Campbell), several ophthalmologists and optometrists, representatives of companies making eye-protection equipment, and an industrial nurse.

The seminar topics have been divided into three basic areas: types of eye injury, types of protection available, and how to ensure their use. A similar seminar was held at Rotorua last year, and this year’s one was arranged in response to the South Island demand.
