Port turns tanker round quickly
Port facUities at Lyttelton yesterday were called on to cope with the unscheduled arrival of the tanker Kuaka, which was unable to use New Plymouth. The tanker was turned round within a few hours to leave the way clear for the Entalina, Amokura, and Anco Charger, all of which will arrived over the next few days. * * * A new shipping policy proposed by the Swedish Government recommends that shipowners be allowed to retain part of the taxation money deducted from seamen. It is proposed that by 1980 it wUI be possible to retain 40 per cent of taxes for seamen engaged In foreign trade, and 10 per cent engaged in home trade. A special committee investlgat■ng shipping costs under lifferent flags concluded that axes were the primary cause of Swedish shipowners’ difficult competitive position. An analysis showed that on ankers the taxes deducted were 10 per cent higher in Sweden han in Norway, and 40 per cent ugher for refrigeration vessels. Social expenses are 40 per cent ligher in Sweden than in Norray for tankers, and 20 per ent higher for refrigeration essels. but net wages after tax 'educations are 10 per cent ower in Sweden for both types f ships. Swedish seamen are paid a ibsistence allowance when not rving at sea. For a ship sailing under a flag convenience with an interitional Transport Federation greement, the gross expendi-
ture for the shipowner is about equal to the net wages of the employees. In the case of English ships, where taxes are not deducted, the seamen’s wages are 90 per cent of the gross expenditure for the shipowner. This means that net wages are nearly as high as on Swedish and Norwegian ships, in spite of the big differences in expenditure for the shipowners. „ t ARRIVALS Kuaka (1.45 p.m.), 16,221, New (u y “s? th ’ Capt ’ J ' ForsUnd ‘ ’ DEPARTURES Vlsha Raksha (3.10 p.m.), 6094, Dunedin.
