Auckland Cup worth $150,000
PA Auckland The Auckland Cup has been given a further substantial stake increase. The 1980 event, to be run as usual on January 1, will be worth $150,000. This rise, announced at Ellerslie yesterday by the President of the Auckland Racing Club, Mr A. M. Hughes, represents a rise of $25,000. The stake for the Railway Handicap, the traditional supporting event to the Auckland Cup, has been increased by $15,000 to $40,000. Th 1978 Auckland Cup was worth $75,000 and thr Railway Handicap -$15,000.
Yesterday’s announcement, which coincided with the opening of the club’s new course, comes on top of news that the New Zealand Derby on Boxing Day will be worth $lOO,OOO — $25,000 more than last year.
