‘Shim not dangerous 9
McDonnell Douglas have disputed an assertion by American Airlines that its engineering could have contributed to the DCIO crash which killed 273 people in Chicago last May. A McDonnell Douglas expert told an inquiry into the crash that a thin metal strip called a “shim” inserted under the left engine pylon would have strengthened rather than weakened it. Last week an American Airlines witness testified that the “shim,” which was not specified in the DCIO design, could have stretched a crack in the flange, or attachment segment, beyond the critical point.—Chicago.
