Limit to exposure?
The Society for the Promotion of Community Standards believes members of the Indecent Publications Tribunal should not be exposed to indecent material for longer than three years, the Press Association reports.
In submissions to the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay) yesterday, the society says: “Continued exposure to indecent material for a long period can affect a person’s judgment of that material. It may also lessen awareness of community standards because of increased familiarity with a very restricted form of publication.” The society proposes that the number of tribunal members should be extended from five to seven, serving a three-year term instead of five years as at present It also suggests there should be a “proper balance” of views represented on the tribunal. “Such persons as housewives and mothers should be considered for representation on the tribunal,” the society said in its submission. Miss Patricia Bartlett said after meeting Mr McLay with other members of the society that he had given the deputation a “very sympathetic” hearing.
