Advice on snow safety

People who occasionally enjoy the snow on the Port Hills were given advice on safety yesterday by a member of the Canterbury Mountain Safety Committee. Snow scraped to the side of roads contained grit, normally spread to prevent cars sliding on the ice. For this reason, people should refrain from throwing snowballs taken from snow on the sides of the road, the spokesman said. People were also advised to wear sunglasses. Motorists are warned to expect patches of ice on the Summit Road, normally covered by grit. The recent falls of snow have meant that snow and grit have been scraped to the sides of the road, leaving it hazardous in places.
