No naming of victims

PA Wellington The Government and the Oppostion unanimously supported a private member’s bill, introduced in Parliament yesterday, which would provide for the automatic suppression of names of victims of sex crimes unless the 1 court ordered otherwise. The Criminal Justice Amendment Bill, introduced by the National member for Rotorua (Mr P. C. East) reverses the present practice whereby names of complainants in sexual cases are published unless the court accedes to a request and orders suppression. Introducing the bill, Mr East said automatic suppression would, it was hoped, encourage the victims of sex crimes to report the offences. It could also make people less apprehensive about giving evidence in court, he said.
