Japanese Ambassador appointed

PA Wellington , The Japanese Government has announced that Mr Takashi Oyamada will succeed' Mr Umeo Kagei as Japanese Ambassador to New Zealand. The new Ambassador is expected to arrive in Wellington by the end , of September. Mr Oyamada, who is 60, was born in Korea and is a law graduate of Tokyo University. He entered the diplomatic service in 1943. He has served at Copenhagen as Japan’s first secretary and counsellor, and at Geneva as counsellor with the Japanese permanent delegation to international organisations. Mr Oyamada returned to Japan in 1967 as director of the personnel division in the Minister’s secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He became deputy directorgeneral in the economic affairs bureau of the same Ministry in 1971, and a year later went to Bangladesh as Japanese Ambassador. He returned to Japan in 1975 and was appointed managing director of the Japan Foundation, a post he has continued to hold. The foundation, an independent body under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, administers international cultural exchange programmes. Mr Oyamada is married, with three daughters. Mrs Oyamada and one of the daughters will join him in New Zealand.
