United should beat Suburbs

By-

DAVID LEGGAT

An unchanged Trans Tours United team will meet Eastern Suburbs in its eighteenth Rothmans Soccer League mafch, in Auckland tomorrow.

However, United was informed by telegram on Thursday evening that the match had been postponed. Yesterday further information was received stating the match was still on. Suburbs is building an impressive record of postponed matches this season. It has played only 14, including four in the last 11 weekends. Yet ironically, because the middle of the points table is so congested, Suburbs can still be among the

top three teams at the end of the season, in spite of being in the bottom three at present. Suburbs has lost the services of its international striker, Alf Stamp, who has apparently left the club, but it is still a hard team to beat.

United’s fine midfield player, Steve Sumner, injured a leg during last weekend’s match with Stop Out, but he will take his place in the team.

United played some outstanding soccer against Stop Out but could score only once. If it can produce a similar standard of play against Suburbs it should be able to hold on to second place on the points table.

Four other matches will be played tomorrow. Hanimex United will be aiming to keep up its challenge for the minor prize money when it meets Stop Out in Auckland; Newmans Nelson United will ■ have the difficult task of trying to become only the second club this season to beat Mount Wellington; Manurewa will meet Courier Rangers, which has picked up a meagre one point from its last four matches; and Wellington Diamond United will play the struggling Blockhouse Bay in Wellington, The deciding match in the Midlands Coachlines League between Rangers and Western today has been postponed. A new date for the

match, which was scheduled to be played at English Park, has not been set.

The important qualifying league match between New Brighton and Halswell United has also been postponed. In addition all lower grade play has been called off.

The annual Canterbury Day for junior representative teams will be held at Cuthberts , Green tomorrow afternoon. The event has been postponed twice this season due to bad weather.

In addition, the penalty kicking competition sponsored by “The Press” will be held tomorrow afternoon. Two sections of three boys will play off in the finals.
