$l0,000 for local groups

Two Christchurch groups will benefit from the first grants distribution of the New Zealand Lottery Board’s welfare services distribution committee. G.R.0.W., a communitybased programme that helps to rehabilitate psychiatric patients, will receive $BOOO. The Schizophrenia Fellowship of New Zealand, Christchurch, will receive $2OOO to help set up a drop-in centre pilot project. The latter organisation helps schizophrenics and their families. The first Lottery Board grants totalled $179,425, but SI.SM has been allocated for distribution this financial year. The initial distribution included $40,025 to 34 persons to help, buy motorised wheelchairs, vehicles and other specialist equipment. The board allocated $BOO,OOO last year.- The increase will allow more aid for volunteer groups facing higher costs and more people to support. Some groups trying to solve problems not covered by existing projects, and without regular funding, could also be helped, said the welfare committee chairman (Mr C. A. Oram, of Upper Hutt).
