Soccer match postponed

Bad weather has forced the cancallation of the soccer match between Canterbury and Illawarra, set down for English Park tonight. Illawarra will therefore end its brief South Island tour with an unbeaten record. It drew 3-3 with Trans Tours United last Thursday, beat Southland, 6-1, and drew 2-2 with Otago. While sympathising with Illawarra, the Canterbury Football Association president (Mr Trevor Gottermeyer) said there were other considerations which affected the decision to abandon the game. “I feel sorry for Illawarra, but we have only just got English Park back and we do not want to ruin it after waiting for it all season,” he said. He added that the cancellation was in the best interests of soccer in Christchurch. However, the next two weeks will be a busy time for the Woolston W.M.C. senior tema. It has four Midlands Coachlines League matches outstanding. On Saturday it will meet Mount Wellington in an Adidas Chatham Cup semi-final in

Auckland, and will then play is four mtches in the space of 12 days. Next Wednesday it will meet. Papanui W.M.C. under lights at English Park, on August 11, it will play Green Island in Dunedin and the following day it will stay in Dunedin and play North End United in what should have been a home game. On either August 18 or 19 it will meet Cashmere-Wan-derers at Garrick Park. On the other day, Canterbury will Otago in the C.F.A. jubilee match. If Woolston's match was to be played on the Saturday, its players would be available for selection in the Canterbury team. The draw for the English Cup competition was announced yesterday, with three" first round matches being played on August 25. Rangers will meet Woolston in the main game at English Park, Papanui will play Western in the early match and Shamrock will meet Technical at Riccarton Domain. Cashmere-Wanderers has the bye. All matches will go to extra time and penatlies if necessary.
