Education cuts ‘bad for young'

Education cuts will mean that the average New Zealand child will have little chance of getting a good education, according to president of Labour Youth (Mr G. D. Jones). Middle-class children would not suffer as much because their parents could afford to “pump” money into parent-teacher associations, send them to private schools, and support them through university, he said. Labour Youth would like to see private schools integrated into the publiceducation system and their I wealth used for the benefit of the whole system. It would also like to see the abolition of single-sex schools and uniforms, and the introduction of Maori as a compulsory subject in secondary schools.
