Twelve plunge to death

, «c«ir . NZPA-Reuter Chamonix, France Twelve persons fell to their death in the French Alps yesterday, seven in a single accident when a British climber lost his footing and plummeted, dislodging other mountaineers below him. The accident occurred soon after midday on the Tour Ronde, a 3800 m peak in the Mont Blanc Massif above Chamonix when 10 groups of climbers, about 30 persons in all, were making their way down. According to observers, one of a pair of Britons roped together near the summit missed his footing in the soft snow. Efforts by his companion to break his fall failed and the pair plunged 400 m down the sheer face of the Tour Ronde, sweeping away 10 other climbers. The tangled mass of bodies ended in a deep crevasse. Rescue teams found a group of dead climbers jammed about 15m down, with others hanging by their ropes below them, still alive.
