Wellington truck drivers out today?
PA Wellington Wellington and Wairarapa truck drivers are expected to be off the roads today to protest about the latest breakdown in their pay talks. They have been called to stop-work meetings starting at 8 a.m. today when they will be given a report on Tuesday’s breakdown of negotiations and will vote on recommendations by the Wellington Drivers’ Union action committee. The opinion in some union quarters yesterday was that the men might not return to work after the meetings. New Zealand-wide action is expected to be co-ordinat-ed when the Drivers’ Federation’s national officers meet in Wellington this evening. No industrial action has
been planned for Canterbury drivers at least for this week, according to a Canterbury Drivers’ Union organiser, Mr L. Bums, yesterday. The union’s secretary (Mr P. R. Liggett) will return to Christchurch tomorow after attending the Drivers* Federation talks and is expected to report to members on the latest developments.
