Soccer youth Long-standing record may be broken
A long-standing Canter-, bury Junior Football Association goal-scoring record seems likely to be broken this season. In 1970, the Christchurch City under-14 team scored 117 goals but this year the North Beach under-13 A team has scored 90 goals and has conceded only four. Under the guidance of Tony Wilkinson, the team had a 7-1 win over Shamrock B on Saturday. Shamrock scored first through Richard Bruce and the Shamrock defence did very well to keep North Beach scoreless until just before half-time, when Craig Allsopp scored the first of his two goals. The North Beach strikers ran riot in the second half with Darren Williams scoring three times and Steven Cherinshaw scored twice. Shane Overend, Stewart Dalkie, David
Joker and Barry Wilkinson form the nucleus of a fine young side, which is heading towards an impressive record. It is many years since the C.J.F.A. has had such a long unbroken sequence of competition games without postponements. Plans are being made to extend the competition on a friendly basis for those teams not involved in knockout competitions. Officially the junior competitions finish at the end of August with club visits and representative matches running into September. Next week-end, Canterbury will host the Region six tournament for the under 12 grade, at Burnside Park. Although it ended a scoreless draw, the tenth grade game between Cashmere B and S.A.S. was a tense, evenly fought affair. The outstanding player on the field was also the smallest. Roddy Clark, of S.A.S., seems certain to have a good future in the game. Two eleventh grade, section six games were played on adjacent pitches at North Hagley Park on Saturday, and ended with the same scoreline. Technical B drew 1-1 with Medbury, with Jamie Swindell (Technical) and Richard Browne being the goalscorers. Michael Gillam impressed as a striker for Technical while its defence was held together by Michael Capon. Browne stood out for Medbury; in addition to scoring the goal he was tireless on defence. Kaiapoi and Cathedral Grammar also drew 1-1 with Perry Jennings scoring for Grammar and Stewart Cowan equalising
for Kaiapoi with a fine effort. Halswell A had a good 2-1 win in a ninth grade match against North Beach. Halswell’s first goal came after the ball had been passed among five players with Gerard Grant adding the final touch. North Beach equalised with a goal by Wayne Dolloman who, with Rodney McDonald, had a fine game, despite being on the losing team. A strong drive by Craig Lawson, the son of the Halswell senior team’s coach, Murray Lawson, gave Halswell the lead again and it held on to win.
