Motor-vehicle pollution
Sir, — Your editorial (July 16) appealing for savings in the use of petrol disappointed me in one respect; you did not mention the high level of pollution caused by motor-cars in cities and this is an aspect that some people would consider carefully. Though the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) seems to feel that the high levels of lead in the atmosphere as shown at the testing point in Manchester Street, over-emphasises the problem of lead pollution, it is a fact that World Health Organisation annual threshold figures are grossly exceeded. If one couples the lead figures to the high levels of nitrous oxides, it is obvious that a decline in city motoring would reduce air pollution to more acceptable levels. Perhaps you have little confidence in ordinary citizens being prepared to perhaps make some minor sacrifice in comfort for the sake of the urban environment? —Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY. July 16, 1979.
