Benefit payment
Sir, — On what grounds does the Government contemplate reducing the supplementary benefit by $8 a week? The maximum benefit for a solo mother with two children is $97 a week if the cost of her rent or housing
repayment qualifies her to receive the $l6 a week supplementary benefit. Since January milk has increased 50 per cent, power charges are up 45 per cent and other prices have risen. An average family has had its regular living costs increased by $8 to $lO a week over the last six months. Why is it, m these times of economic struggle, that the Government chooses to deprive the children of a solo parent who has no say in her income? .1 feel a mother’s place is with her children, but this maj' no longer be possible if the supplementary benefit is altered. — Yours, etc., RACHEL RYAN.
