Tranquilliser drugs

Sir, — As a lay person who in the past had considerable personal experience with the minor tranquilliser drugs, I have for many years been aware of my concern about the role they play in the day-to-day life of so many of my fellow countrymen. A newspaper report earlier this year said that last year New Zealanders consumed 39.5 million valium tablets, the most commonly prescribed tranquilliser. Dr Fraser McDonald, Superintendent of Carrington Hospital, Auckland, deplores the continued use of and addiction to the minor tran* quilliser drugs. Do the.se facts not give food for thought that, once again, we the people, society, must plead guilty to not loving and caring enough for our fellow men? — Yours, etc., MARGARET MANNING. July 14, 1979.
