Building a new paling fence
Building a new paling fence is a job that the home handyman can do. The sketch shows the method of construction.
The standard paling fence consists of posts set in the ground, rails nailed to the posts and palings lailed to the rails.
The, palings rest on top of a plinth board nailed to he posts at ground level.
Your timber merchant will advise you on the requirements of your preference if you supply details of size.
It is important when digging the post holes and positioning the posts that regular checks be made to ensure they are in line and vertical.
Next notch the posts for the rails — the bottom rail about 20cm from ground level, and the top rail about 10cm below the finished top line of the fence. The notches are made by sawing and chiselling.
Cut and nail on the rails. Joints in the rails should come in the middle of a post. Next nail on the plinth,
keeping it just clear of the earth.
Nail on the palings. Keep the palings vertical as you go — check with the spirit level.
