Military masquerade ends with conviction
PA Auckland A Manurewa youth masqueraded as a soldier and lived at the Papakufa military camp for a week before he was discovered, the Magistrate’s Court at Papakura has been told. Roger Wharepouri Tahapehi, aged 19, an unemployed storeman. appeared in the court dressed in soldier’s clothing and admitted a charge of being idle and disorderly. The police withdrew a charge of conspiracy. Sergeant A. W. Tremewan told the Court that Tahapehi had been found at Papakura camp dressed in a soldier’s uniform.
He said Tahapehi had been wandering around the camp for five days, had been sleeping on another soldier’s floor and buying meals, from the garrison club. Mr Tremewan said Tahapehi’s parents said he was afflicted with a mental disability which made him fabricate stories. For Tahapehi, Mr D. D. D. Rice said the defendant had told him he had dressed up as a soldier because at one stage he had been one.
Mr K. H. Mason, S.M., convicted and remanded Tahapehi in custody until July 16 for a probation report and sentence.
