Drivers’ strike
Sir, — With the oil crisis making the future prosperity of New Zealanders bleak in the extreme, the continuing daily strikes can only compound our problems beyond reasonable solution. The Federation of Labour’s wage proposals will only serve to incite further disruption and every demand supposedly satisfied makes every New Zealander worse off. We have in this country freedom without responsibility and unless some degree of reason is restored, the trade union movement will destroy the very people it was designed to protect. In an atmosphere of “every man for himself” where greed has taken over the country, everyone will be drawn into the vortex unless the vast majority of concerned citizens rise up and say: “We have had enough.” The Government is blamed for too much control or not enough control, but our future is in our hands. Let every wouldbe striker look to his own conscience. — Yours, etc., M. GRAHAM. July 10, 1979.
