Use of Maui gas

Sir. — As a dedicated mainiander, I would like to ask the chairman of . Shell, Mr Tudhope: (1) Does he agree that given a great increase in drilling activity, the chances of finding further large accumulations of natural gas are excellent? (2) That natural gas as a fuel for homes and industry is superior to any other form of gas — coal, from L.P.G., various mixtures, etc. Loading of prices does not alter the fact that natural gas is the premium fuel. (3) That a pipeline to the South Island would confer great benefits to all communities along the pipeline. This would not be so if L.N.G. was shipped to the larger centres. (4) Did Shell take into consideration the politics of the situation and think about a pipeline to the South Island and a liquefied natural gas plant in Canterbury?—Yours, etc., ALAN FALLOON. May 29, 1979.

[This letter was referred to the chairman of Shell but no reply has been received. — Editor.]
