Pollution ’very high’

Inner city pollution levels in Christchurch on Saturday night were described as “very high” by a Health Department spokesman yesterday. Readings obtained included smoke, 318; sulphur dioxide, 50; and nitrogen oxides, 451. These were the highest for some time, and were attributable to the calm weather on Saturday afternoon coupled with two cold, frosty evenings on Friday and Saturday. ' The nitrogen oxide, level was more than twice as high as the accepted “high” level of 200, as was the smoke level. Sulphur dioxide levels generally were low. The pollution was dispersed by a brisk breeze on Sunday afternoon, and Sunday’s readings were lower, said the spokesman.
