Parking building for cycles
A Christchurch couple is banking on an upsurge in bicycle traffic to the city centre.
Mr and Mrs Alan Bishop are setting up a private cycle-parking business in a former Cashel Street warehouse, next to the new Shades Tavern project, “We are getting back to the stage where many more people will ride bikes for work and shopping,” Mr Bishop said. “I think the days of the car are nearly finished.” The parking area, completely under cover, will be able to hold about 350 bicycles, all of them suspended by their front wheels. It will open on July 23. At the start, it will be open from 7.30 a.m. to 6 p.m., but those hours could be expanded. The cost will be 45c a day, $l.BO weekly, or $6.50 a calendar month. An attendant will be hired to watch the cycles, and the building can be locked.
