Man jailed

PA Auckland A Suva businessman devised an elaborate scheme to defeat New Zealand immigration laws, the Magistrates' Court at Auckland has been told.

Before Mr H Y. GilHand, SM., was James Narain, aged 56, a travel agent, of Fiji, who was sentenced to 18 weeks imprisonment on three charges of being a party to the commission of an offence under the Immigration Act. by which a person to whom a temporary permit was granted remained in New Zealand after the permit expired, between February 25 and May 8.

Narain was also sentenced to a month’s imprisonment on a charge of overstaying and a similar sentence for failing to comply with his terms of bail between May 16 and 21. These will be concurrent with the other term.

The Court ordered that Narain, who had been convicted on all charges, be deported after serving the sentence.

Narain ostentatiously arranged air tickets to India via New Zealand for three Fijian Indians, and after getting work for them in the middle of the North Island charged them commission.
