New name pays

What’s in a name? Twenty years ago, it meant a great deal to a New Zealand company trying to get a fledgling export industry off the ground. Turners and Growers were faced with a problem. How could they secure a market for Chinese, gooseberries in the United States, potentially a major customer, when the name was unacceptable in the politically sensitive climate ot the time?

The name “kiwi fruit” was coined, and the industry boomed. This year, the export of kiwifruit could earn up to S3SM in overseas funds for New Zealand; and Turners and Growers held a small function recently to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the change. The millionth tray of export-packed kiwifruit was presented to Sir Harvey Turner, who in 1959 was the managing director of the company.
