Bill aims to ban child abductions

PA Wellington Measures to discourage child abductions by noncustodial parents were introduced in Parliament on Thursday evening by the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay). The proposals-, in the form of the Guardianship Amendment Bill, sought to plug loopholes in legislation which might encourage parents to abduct their children either to or from New Zealand, in order to reopen custody proceedings, Mr McLay said. The bill provides a system for the registration and enforcement in New Zealand of custody orders made overseas.

It also provides for the enforcement of New Zealand orders in Australia or Britain.

Mr R. W. Prebble (Lab., Auckland Central) said the Opposition would support the bill in principle. “The question of abduction of children, not from this country overseas, but from overseas to New Zealand, is an urgent one,” he said.
