Irwin leads U.S. golf

NZPA-Reuter Toledo, Ohio Hale Irwin, mixing brilliance with bogeys, stormed around the 6388 m Inverness Club course in a four-under-par 67 yesterday to open up a three-stroke lead after the third round of the United State; Open golf championship. Irwin, who won the 1974 title over the even more tortuous Winged Foot course, suffered four bogeys but bounced back each time with

six birdies and an eagle for a four-under-par total of 209 on a hot breezy day. Tom Weiskopf, who has been subdued this seaon by physical problems, matched Irwin’s 67 to hold second place on 212. Two strokes behind were the 1976 winner, Jerry Pate, and Tom Purtzer, with Larry Nelson and Lee Elder at 215 and the Australian David Graham, Bill Rogers and Bob Gilder all on 216.
