Railway extends lead

Badminton

Railway moved further ahead in the A grade badminton competition when it was the only team to earn maximum points from the eighth round on Saturday.

Although handicapped by a leg injury, Geoff Miller,, the RailwayNo. 1. was too resourceful for David Ross and after losing the first game in setting Miller took the next two decisively. Later, Miller’s three-year-old son, Blair, took to the court for a “workout” with his father and the way young Miller handles a racket strongly suggests that the long Miller reign in Canterbury badminton will move into a third generation. Miller, sen, was not the only leading player handicapped by injury. Alison Ross has still not resumed plaving and Paul Boatwood had to default his singles to Colin Goh when ligaments he tore in a leg some weeks ago gave him fresh trouble.

Boatwood managed to return to the court for his two doubles matches and although hardly able to walk he was able to contribute to two wins.

Hagley II maintained its good form with a 6-2 win over Knox, although Knox’s efficiency was reduced by a leg injury which prevented its top woman, Lynda Kitchingham/ from moving freely. Nevertheless, Hagley played well, espeically in the doubles where David Bell and Karen Burn combined for an impressive win. The Hagley No. 1 side also had a good win, 7-1, over Canterbury. Lindsay Robinson saved the rout for Canterbury by beating Stephen Chambers in a hardfought singles, but later Chambers got his revenge when he

and his mixed doubles partner, Jill Jamieson, beat Robinson and Audrey Smith in an exciting fin* ish, the match slipping from Canterbury's grasp in the third game. The points are: Railway 107.
