University women win
A much more co-ordinated University side stopped Continental Caterers’ winning streak of three victories by beating the country girls 68-49 in the women’s first division basketball competition at Cowles Stadium on Saturday.
In the only other match Mairehau High School beat Rebels 5344. The third game between Mairehau and United was deferred. Mairehau and Checkers were at the national club championships in Napier.
University 68 (A. Beukenholdt 23, D. Mac Kay 14, P. King 8, M. Swainson 6, T. Beukenholdt 6, A. Brokenshire 5, D. Atkins 4, I. Vellekoup 2), Continental Caterers 49 (R. King 20, J. Harris 8, F. van Zanten 6, L. Stevenson 6, B. Fortune 4, C. Winter 3, J. McKay 2>.
University’s performances to date have been dismal but on Saturday it was inspired by the presence of its coach. Murray Mac Kay. It set about its game determined not to be the fourth victim of Continental Caterers. Andrianna Beukenholdt, University’s main firepower, assisted by good team work, attacked the aterers’ basket regularly in the first half. Beukenholdt scored a valuable 16 points in the first spell to give University a commanding lead 33-20 at half-time. University hustled the Caterers defence and soon had it in trouble when Carolyn Winter, one of its main defenders, had to be rested with four fouls in four minutes. It also attempted to control the high scoring activities of the Caterers’ captain, Rongo King, who still managed 10 points in each half to take her personal tally in club basketball to 186 points this season. Denise Mac Kay played her usual commanding role for University and was ably supported at times by Ann Brokenshire, Tina Beukenholdt and Penney King. Continental Caterers’ attack, foiled by sound Univers-
ity defence, was not as coordinated as in recent weeks with King the only player standing out. Mairehau High School 53 (1. Lee 14, B. Palmer 13, V. Cassidy 10, D. Broughton 6, M. Stokes 6, K. Richardson 4), Rebels 44 (C. Chaplin 14, S. Le Warne 6, M. Williams 6, E. Young 6, J. Douglas 4, G. Chin 2, D. Shanks 2, A. Robinson 2, Z. Meads 2). This game was full of mysteries with very good basketball at times by both sides and at other times it was very dismal. Another unusual aspect was the sight of the Mairehau High School coach, Kerry Williams, sitting very quietly among the spectators in the stand while the team captain, played a player-coach role in the court. The game was even 13-all in the thirteenth minute when Mairehau began to produce some team work, attacking the Rebels defence strongly and piling on the points. Entering the last minute before half-time Mairehau was ahead 30-20 and three quick baskets in only about 40 seconds gave Mairehau a deserved 36-20 lead at half-time.
Rebels, playing its best basketball, began to peg back the lead and after eight minutes trailed 33-42. Mairehau High went through a very dismal period as it attempted to change the man-to-man defence to a zone defence and allowed Rebels to close the gap to six points. The red-headed Isobel Lee put in another fine game scoring several delightful shots, while the fleet-footed Bron Wyn Palmer gave her best performance for some time Low’er grade results were:— Men’s Division Two.—Checkers B 77, Riccarton 69; Y.M.C.A. 47, Taxes 38; University B 67, Teachers’ College 43; C.B.H.S.
