Egypt, Israel open borders
NZPA-Reuter El-Arish, Egypt
The borders of Egypt and Israel are now open, the Israeli Prime Minister (Mr Begin) and the Egyptian President (Mr Sadat) proclaimed yesterday.
The announcement came not long after Mr Sadat and Mr Begin had opened talks in El-Arish on the thorny issue of Palestinian autonomy in the Israeli-occupied territories.
The two leaders met with the United States
Secretary of State (Mr Cyrus Vance) soon after Mr Begin’s arrival in the Sinai capital as the guest of Mr Sadat, just two days after the town had been returned to Egypt after 12 years of Israeli occupation. It was the two leaders’ first meeting since they signed their peace treaty two months ago in Washington. The treaty called for the borders to be opened in eight months. Earlier report, Page 8.
