“Ashamed to be a New Zealander"

Sir, — “Farmer ‘ashamed to be a New Zealander’ ” ("The Press,” May 24); I could not help but read on and see why: strikes for petty and unnecessary reasons, says Mr M. R. Murchison, who then goes on to present a case for Federated Farmers that any good industrial union representative would probably admire. He fails to understand that his demands for guaranteed stability and economic returns constitute the same things he complains about. In the case of

non-production, to all intents and purposes, strike action, often enough unnecessary, is all the less legitimate because his members are not under pressure to produce, or else. It is not my intention to castigate Mr Murchison for his intemperate remarks but rather to invite him to look beyond his own small territory and make an attempt to understand a total New Zealand scene of which he need not be ashamed. Yours, etc., W. J. McKAY. May 24, 1979.
