Large jury numbers

PA Auckland More than 350 persons may have to be called for jury service when Black Power gang members appear in the Supreme Court at Auckland for trial on charges of unlawful assembly. Fifty-six gang members have been committed for trial after a seven-day depositions hearing. Two more gang members will appear on the charge, and warrants have been issued for the arrest of four who did not appear in court. A hearing for another was adjourned because he is in hospital. The Crown prosecutor (Mr D. S. Morris) said that, as each accused was allowed to challenge six prospective jury members, an unusually large number of' prospective jurors would have to be called.

The trial is expected to be held in September or October.
