Function pays tribute
A ship’s master who was cap tain of the P and O cruise liner Pacific Princess for the start of the Love Boat television series, yesterday hosted a function to pay a tribute to the port of Lyttelton.
Captain J. Lefevre, master of bulk carrier Baron Napier at the port, disclaimed any coincidental similarity to Captain Stebbings, the present television “master” of the Pacific Princess. But he did admit to be still corresponding with the American director of the series. Captain Lefevre declined .to comment when asked whether he regarded his present command a promotion in terms of seamanship. With the Lyttelton manager for Kinsey and Company and harbour board member (Mr L. W. Laing) he and fellow officers members of the Lyttelton Harbour Board and representatives of shipping organisations at the port. Captain -.Lefevre paid a tribute to the co-operation received at Lyttelton, the natural deep water advantages for bulk carriers and the efficiency of the port maritime staff. “And I am pleased now that the captain of a German submarine, who could have sunk the sailing vessel Pamir with your Captain Roy Champion in command did not do so because he was sailing ship-trained, ’> the captain added. The story of the Pamir had become legend throughout the shipping world and an inspiration to all modern day sailors, Captain Lefevre said. Captain Champion was deputising for the board’s chairman (Mr J. E. Mannering) who was unable to be present. The Baron Napier, with phosphate from Christmas Island, was making its first visit to Lyttelton. ❖ * * More talks will be held between the Lyttelton Borough Council and the Lyttelton Harbour Board over parking proposals for Magazine Bay in conjunction with a planned marina. Borough council representatives have held lone meeting with harbour board staff to hear the proposals. The council will now ask the harbour board to attend a full meeting so that the plans can be discussed. Objections are expected to any plans to upset the environmental aspects of the Magazine Bay area. ARRIVALS W. H. Or bell, dredge, Dunedin, for dry dock. DEPARTURES Ngapara (1.30 p.m.i. 4348, Capt. W.
