S.P.C.A. men receive medal
PA Auckland Two officers of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who were assaulted earlier this year have received medals for their ordeal. Mr K. Young and Mr L. Gatwick were presented with the Royal Federation’s bronze medal of merit at a function organied by the S.P.C.A.
It was the first time the award had been made in New Zealand.
Both inspectors were assaulted an February 26 by the owner of a dog when they called to investigate a complaint of ill-treat-ment to the animal.
Mr Gatwick's injuries prevented him from attending work for three weeks. A man was convicted and fined for th* assault.
“We are gratified the society has awarded us this medal,” said Mr Young. “We still care I about animal welfare and : are willing to go into any situation where animals are at stake.” Since the assault, all S.P.C.A. officers have been ordered to travel in pairs while doing evening work, or to be accompanied by a policeman.
