Law staff boost unlikely
Wellington reporter Christchurch, indedd ths northern half of the South Island, can not expect another Supreme Court judge or magistrate to b« appointed in the near future. in spite of persistent rumours to the contrary.
The law permits a maximum of 26 judges and 65 magistrates for New Zealand. and already there ar« 26 judges and 63 magistrates. The appointment of another two magistrates is expected soon, but accord* ing to the Justice Department neither is scheduled for the region between thj Waitaki River and Cools Strait.
The number of judges is limited by the Judicature Act, 1908. This has been amended many times tn increase the number, and was amended only last year to permit two more judges. No amendments are planned at the moment.
The number of magis« trates is limited by the Magistrate's Courts Act, 1947. This has been amended twice in the last five years to permit more appointments, and no further amendments ire planned at present.
