Use of buses
Sir, — My heart bleeds for the poor children who have three miles to go to Mairehau High School. When I started school in Westport at five years of age I cycled three miles each way. Many of us did as it was the only means of transport. And anyone who knows the Coast knows how it can rain there. If it was too heavy and the road flooded I stayed at home. If it rained unexpectedly my mother, as a caring parent, cycled in with my coat. No cars then. If I got wet through walking with a flat tyre a hot bath was the answer. This was quite usual until I was 20, and it never harmed any of us. It did make me appreciate a car years later, and not take it for granted. — Yours, etc., P. DRUMMOND. May 7, 1979.
