Chch makes strong bid in Woodward Cup

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

Christchurch, the defending Woodward Cup interclub golf champion, was quickly into stride in the opening two rounds of .the competition at Waimairi Beach yesterday.

There were no big upsets, but there were surprises. Christchurch finished that day as the only team with the maximum two points, but Waimairi Beach and Waitikiri, with a win and a draw apiece, stayed in close attendance and Avondale, with two draws, also remained unbeaten. Last year, Waimairi Beach finished last with one and a half points. It has equalled that record already with five rounds still remaining. Avondale showed its resilience in the afternoon by drawing with the capable Waitikiri side. But the most significant second round result was Harewood’s whitewashing of Connga, 8-0. Christchurch is a very competent combination and seven of its eight players have represented Canterbury. It did not start too promisingly against Harewood and trailed after nine holes, but the Shirley players rallied well on the back nine. Harewood’s lone success was achieved by Paul Shearer, who won the last three boles to beat John Williamson, 2 down. Shearer won 16 with a good birdie putt, claimed 17 when Williamson missed his par putt and the last with another long birdie putt. In the afternoon, Christchurch made a fine start, Parlane and Chris Barry racing away to big leads and winning easily against their Templeton rivals. But Templeton offered solid resistance in the other games, none of which finished before the sixteenth. A determined Harley Henderson recovered to beat Williamson, who had an unhappy day, and Wayne Tucker “played like a tired old man” to lose to Michael Roche. Templeton’s half

point was gained by John Prebble, who played a superb short game over the final holes against the redoubtable Turner. Points are: Christchurch 2 (12), Waimairi Beach 1J (94), Waitikiri 1} (9|), Harewood 1 (9J), Avondale 1 (8), Coringa 1 (s|), Templeton 0 (5), Russley 0 (5).
