Breakthrough for N.Z. engineering firm
Auckland-based Buckley and Young Ltd, principal trading company of the Chemby Industries Group, has won an order from Britain for two wool scours worth more than $500,000 — the first time New Zealand wool processing equipment has been exported to the Northern Hemisphere. “Securing this business in what is the traditional home of the world textile and carpet industry is certainly an exciting breakthrough and is testimony to the excellent workmanship of Annett and Darling and the advanced technology the company has
’ achieved in association with the Wool Research Organisa- : tion of New Zealand,” said Mr George. The WRONZ comprehensive scouring system ■ is renowned throughout the New Zealand scouring industry and with the in- : corporation of the unique mini-bowl system, Annett and Darling is now produc- ; ing what is considered the most efficient and economic scouring system available in ; the world. With increased throughput but reduced [ energy and water use and ! effluent discharge, the system is contributing to the promotion of wool internationally by making it more competitive against synthetics. The order, to supply and commission two complete scour lines featuring the locally-developed mini-bowl system, will be met by Chemby Associate, Annett and Darling, Ltd, of Timaru, long-established as Australasia’s foremost producer of wool scouring equipment. Buckley and Young’s export manager (Mr A. D. George) confirmed that the two scour lines, to be delivered this year, are destined
for a subsidiary of the S. and W. Beris’ford Group, Jarmain and Son, Ltd, who are one of the largest commission wool processors in Europe. He said the sales had come in the face of strong competition from British, Australian and European manufacturers. Encouraged .by its success in Britain, Buckley and Young is now actively pursuing new markets throughout Europe, including Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Rumania, in South America, and also the People’s Republic of China. A delegation from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture visited Annett and Darling’s plant last year and saw wool processing equipment being manufactured. Mr George said the Chemby Group wished to place on public record the invaluable assistance it was receiving from New Zealand Trade Commissioners in the development of overseas markets. As a result of export growth, Annett and Darling’s Timaru plant was being expanded to cope with the needs of both the local and overseas woollen industries.
