Late sport St Albans second in twilight cricket
St Albans, the club responsible for the organisation of ‘‘The Press” twilight cricket tournament, emerged successfully from a close tussle for second position behind Lancaser Park when the 1978-79 series ended last evening. Before the final round St Albans and Old Collegians had been tied in second place, with Marist and High School Old Boys only a few points further back. Their prospects of taking the top prize had already been extinguished, though, for Park had an unasailable lead.
Of the leaders, only St Albans and Marist finished with victories. Park bowed to Suburban, Old Collegians lost to Riccarton, and St Albans accounted for Old Boys. The loss was particularly costly to Old Collegians, for Marist was able to nudge ahead of it and claim third. Park <145 points) had a comfortable winning margin over St Albans (129), ahead of Marist (123), Old Collegians (122), Old Boys (115), Burnside-West-University (115), Suburban (114>. Riccarton (109), Sydenham (104), East-Shirley (101), Supporters (101) and Schools (88).
Justin Boyle (Burnside-West), Geoff Wright (Schools), Graham Moore <St Albans), Kevin Cowan (Marist). and Peter Stubbings (Riccarton) shared the highest individual score of the round, all with 36 retired.
The Cedarwood "man of the match” awards went to Wright. Gary Baxter (Suburbani, George Nicoll (St Albans), Cowan. Stubbings. and Kevin Congdon (Sydenham). A fine all-round performance nv Congdon—3s retired and three wickets—earned him the Lion Breweries “player of the day” prize. Results:—
