Admission to Ruapuna
Sir, — When is an adult an adult? My daughter, aged 15, took her nephews to the Ruapuna drag races on February 11. Granted they went to the back fence as they live in that area. The advertisements for these meetings say that children under 12 accompanied by an adult are admitted free. My daughter was charged $2.50 and on° nine-year-old with her was also charged $2.50. Tho
other two children with her, one aged 11, and the other aged four were told to p... off, not once but twice. When approached about this, the man responsible said that an adult was, in his eyes, someone old enough to vote. I am fed up with these rip-off merchants and Ruapuna has seen the last of us. His manner and the way he spoke to the children is inexcusable. — Yours, etc., R. J. BLACK. February 11, 1979.
[On behalf of the organisers, Mr Roger Gregge comments; “Children under 12 are to be accompanied by an adult. This is mainly because parents drop their children off and the finishing times vary and the organisers do not like to see children waiting around for parents when there is no-one else around. They leave the course by 4.45 p.m. Their concern is that the course backs on to the prison.” Mr Gregge would like the correspondent to get in touch with him personally to discuss the matter further by writing to P.O. Box 1573 or by telephoning Seekers, 792-720.]
