Planning Council’s report
Sir, — Alan Wilkinson (February 16) is most unwise to quote the late Dr W. B. Sutch on the New Zealand economy. While the New Zealand Planning Council is not justified, the comment of the necessity for competition and efficiency makes economic sense. Dr Sutch had such profound faith in his policy of industrialisation at any price that personal funds in a Swiss bank were necessary in case of accidents. The socialist myth of self-sufficiency has been exposed as a political fraud and it is laughable to think that we can live on protection. New Zealand has a natural agricultural base and if given the incentive the export of primary produce could again earn 85 per cent of our overseas exchange. The farming community is: only marking time and across the board tax relief would achieve a remarkable increase in production figures. In the meantime only 85 per cent of our overseas funds are used to bring in raw materials and goods associated with manufacturing. — Yours, etc., L. J. STEVENS, Oamaru. February 16, 1979.
