Hospital's sewerage problem

An electrical fault in pumping-station switchgear caused part of the Christchurch Hospital’s sewerage system to break down yesterday morning. and liquid effluent overflowed into the Avon River for an hour. Mr R. I. Parker, the chief executive of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, said that the incident had been unavoidable. Engineering staff had taken immediate steps to stop discharge into the river. The fault was discovered about 8 a.m. Engineers brought in two tanker trucks to transfer the effluent to an authorised discharge point in the street.

Essential services would not be affected while pumping equipment was being repaired. Mr Parker said.
