Gallery hours
Sir, — May I ask why the hours of the McDougall Art Gallery are not extended to suit the holiday period and summer weather conditions? I object to being shut out at 4.30 p.m. when there are so many daylight hours left in these summer days and, if this Sunday is any indication, when so many ’ people are eager to spend them at such an important exhibition as that by Diane Arbus which is now showing. — Yours, SIMON MORLEY.

(The director of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Dr Rodney Wilson, replies: “Your correspondent’s very worth-while desire to see extended summer opening hours for the art gallery is shared by gallery staff. However, whilst the possibility of creating public access between the Canterbury Museum and the gallery is under discussion, any revision of gallery hours, at present the same as those of the museum, could only be considered in conjunction with that institution. For a variety of reasons it would be premature now to attempt to do this.”)
