U.S. beef market closing

PA Wellington United States interests are investing in beef farming in South America and as the beef becomes available on the United States market there will be fewer opportunities for producers in New Zealand and Australia, accoring to the Victorian Minister for Agriculture (Mr G. W. Smith).

President Carter seemed certain to approve the Counter-Cyclical Beef Import Bill being considered by the American Congress and this would further restrict Australian and NewZealand exports, he said.

Australia would have to diversify its beef markets, with more effort being made in places like Korea, China and the Middle East, Mr Smith said. He is in New Zealand for the conference of Australian state Minsters of Agriculture in Christchurch next week.
