Single-seaters competitive
Some of New Zealand's future Formula Pacific stars will be seen on Sunday in the Formula Ford races. This class of nippy little 1600 cu cm singleseaters is renowned for its fierce, close racing and a full field of about 20 will race at Wigram.
Mike King, of Auckland, has been this year’s outstanding driver in the absense of last year’s Formula Ford champion, Grant Walker, who has moved up to Formula Pacific. However, Finch’s New Zealand-built Cuda has been constantly harried by the Titan of the Blenheim driver, Jeff Pascoe, and it will be interesting to see which driver comes out on top at Wigram.
Other top drivers in Formula Ford this year include Kim Crocker (Hamilton, Palliser), Mike King (Auckland, Titan) and Mike Austin (Auckland, Titan), and they will all drive at Wigram. A very strong South Island contingent will appear at Wigram this year to ensure that the North Islanders do not have everything their own way, and this will be led by' Christchurch’s fiery “Flying Dutchman,” Lucas Verhoeven, in his GLH Owens. Others include Gary Jenkins (Gore, Elfin), Pat Chaney (Kaiapoi, Van Dieman), Lyn Johnson (Christchurch, Hustler) and Ross Noble (Christchurch, Begg FM3).
